IKO is releasing a short video in the beginning of January detailing what roofing contractors need to know about proper attic ventilation. In this video, IKO shows how to install common ventilation systems for asphalt roofing and general guidelines to follow. The episode is the latest in IKO’s “Blueprint for Roofing” series, which debuted around 10 years ago and is being completely revamped to encompass the roofing products, codes, techniques and technology of today.

CertainTeed® Intake Vent is a rooftop-installed, shingle-over vent that provides continuous intake airflow at the roof's edge, making it an ideal solution for homes with little or no roof overhang. It can also be used to supplement existing soffit or undereave vents. Intake Vent features internal baffles, a drainage system, a weather filter, and louver openings sized to minimize infiltration by insects and windblown debris. Each vent offers nine square inches of net-free area per linear foot. Combined with CertainTeed Ridge Vent, CertainTeed Intake Vent is one of the most efficient ventilation systems on the market.

Residential roofing contractors asked for more control over proper intake attic ventilation. The Edge™ Vent installs on the roof – during a roofing project – at the very edge of the roof with matching shingles on top. Each four-foot rigid, plastic stick provides nine square inches of airflow per linear foot – making it easy to balance with the exhaust vents. It can be used on roofs with or without an overhang. It’s an easy way to add extra intake during reroofing. It’s suitable for any climate and passed a 30-day ice dam test.

BILCO’s new thermally broken smoke vent features R-20+ insulation and a frame and cover design that minimizes heat transfer between interior and exterior metal surfaces. Similar to the company’s line of thermally broken roof hatches, this new product resists harmful condensation and sets the standard for energy efficiency while providing the safety and protection of automatic smoke ventilation. Thermally broken smoke vents are UL listed and available in both standard and custom sizes.

Shaped like an aircraft wing, the Python™ Weather-Tite™ FlexFit™ 3-IN-1 Ridge Vent closed external baffle makes the vent unable to collect debris and become blocked. The vent is field convertible from a 12-inch to 10-inch or 9-inch cap size ridge vent. The polyester composite weather barrier centered in vent maximizes net-free ventilation while blocking out moisture, snow, pests, and dust, and built-in self-closing end caps means no additional parts or labor needed. The vent is suitable for any pitch from 3/12 to 12/12, is manufactured from no break polypropylene and backed by a limited lifetime warranty. The vent has 84 square inches of net free venting per piece.

FasciaVent by DCI is providing cool air to any pitched roof with 9 NFVA rating. FasciaVent installed on asphalt or metal roofing allows air to enter through the top of the existing fascia board (1-inch incision), travel under the entire roof deck and out the preferred exhaust vent. FasciaVent is easy to install. It protects the eaves from gutter leakage and allows 100% airflow with winter snow. FasciaVent is virtually invisible after installation.

Versatile Seal-Fast Liqui-Flash polyurethane roofing sealant from Mule-Hide Products Co. seals complex details quickly and permanently. It is compatible with asphalt, modified bitumen, metal, PVC, EPDM, and primed TPO roofs and may be top-coated with acrylic and silicone coatings. It is ideal for repairing hail-damaged polyurethane foam roofs. It can tackle typical and difficult-to-access applications, including flashings, skylights, pitch pockets and pans, inlaid gutters, air conditioners, roof vents, penetrations, ductwork, roof hatches, chimneys and seams. Seal-Fast Liqui-Flash requires minimal tooling but is viscous enough to prevent running and drain-out. Semi-self-leveling, it can be used to seal and repair single-ply membranes at any slope.

GAF EverGuard® TPO Quick Spray Adhesive LV50 is a sprayable, solvent-based contact adhesive for bonding smooth TPO membranes to various substrates. Quick Spray offers faster membrane installation than traditional bucket and roller adhesives, with flash time in five minutes or less from time of application, and coverage up to 10 squares per canister (93 square meters) when properly applied. It has a high initial tack and can be applied at an ambient temperature of 20 degrees Fahrenheit (-6.7 degrees Celsius) and above for cold weather application. The product is also available in 20, 45, and 90 square sizes, in refillable canisters.

Garland’s R-Mer Seal self-adhering, high-temp metal roofing underlayment forms a flexible, watertight seal under Garland metal roof systems even in high temperature roof conditions. Its flexible membrane, formulated with high-temperature rubberized asphalt, boasts excellent elongation capabilities and tensile strength to accommodate the expansion and contraction of a roof surface. R-Mer Seal’s peel-and-stick application is fast and easy and its cross-laminated polymer film provides an excellent slip-resistant surface for installers. For use on slopes 2:12 and higher.

Duro-Last® Vapor Barrier is a self-adhesive vapor barrier composed of SBS modified bitumen adhesive on the bottom surface and a tri-laminated woven polyethylene on the top surface. A silicone release film covers the self-adhesive on the bottom surface. While designed as an underlayment to minimize vapor transmission, the Duro-Last Vapor Barrier can also provide a durable, walkable, temporary surface that protects the decking for up to four months until a roofing system can be installed.
