GAF Energy voluntarily recalled its nail-able Timberline Solar Shingles over potential fire hazards due to electrical components within the roofing system.

Issued on July 27, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said the recall involves Timberline’s TLS-1 jumper modules and TLS-1 energy shingles.

Jumper modules transfer energy from the solar shingles, and a subset can malfunction. GAF Energy also found an issue with a subset of diodes incorporated in the energy shingles that may cause thermal events when partially or fully shaded.

“It was found that these electrical components can malfunction, posing a fire hazard,” the company said on its website.

GAF Energy has received one report of a fire and five reports of “thermal incidents” that resulted in property damage, including damage to the roof deck. No injuries have been reported concerning the incidents.

The manufacturer said it decided to conduct a voluntary recall, repair and testing program for two components in Timberline Solar roofing systems installed between November 2021 and April 2023. The Consumer Product Safety Commission reports that about 2,100 units are affected by the recall.

As part of the recall, GAF Energy will replace all jumper modules, check each solar shingle's electrical components for defects, and repair them free of charge.

GAF Energy has been remotely shutting off impacted systems until repairs occur. Consumers will be compensated for monetary losses due to any lost solar energy generation.

The company is scheduling, on average, two to three weeks in advance for the remediation work. GAF Energy has reached out to impacted homeowners directly by email and phone.

If your customer had a Timberline Solar roofing system installed on their home between November 2021 and April 2023, the product is part of GAF Energy’s voluntary recall, repair and testing program. Customers are encouraged to contact their installer or call GAF Energy at (888) 838-5567.

Antis Roofing & Waterproofing, the Irvine, Calif.-based concern that is a household name in Southern California, announced it would donate its David Chow Humanitarian Award cash prize to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Orange Coast.

The $2,500 check, awarded to Antis in 2022, will be presented to the Club during the nonprofit’s ‘Back-to-School’ Backpack Drive, scheduled for Wednesday, August 3, the concern said in a news release.

“Our campaign provides about a thousand new backpacks and supplies to kids who need them most, and this contribution helps make it happen,” said David Blair, the nonprofit’s director of philanthropy and corporate partnerships. “We are so grateful for Charles Antis’ constant dedication to our cause; this honor is just another tribute to that dedication.”

California Love Drop served up its locally famous lunch from Wahoo’s Fish Tacos, with Wahoo co-founder cooking on site. Yogurtland treats and beverages were served during the event. Rising star Madison Taylor Baez, the 12-year-old singer and actress who was a “Golden Buzzer” winner on “America’s Got Talent” last year, was expected to appear.

Antis expected around 250 kids to attend the party; each received a backpack filled with critical school supplies, including new books donated by children’s author Lisa Wiehebrink and founder of Tails that Teach.

“The youth who [received] the Backpack Drive supplies have been identified as kids who would likely rely on hand-me-down or leftover supplies from the prior school year,” The Boys & Girls Clubs’ Blair said. “This [event offered] our kids not just the tools they need in school, but also the confidence that comes with great quality and just a bit of compassion.”
