Problem Solving for the Modern-day Commercial Roofing Market
Compiled by Art Aisner
Being underestimated is Bradley Rathjen's competitive advantage. At 23, the estimator and project manager at Madsen Roofing & Waterproofing in Sacramento, Calif., has learned that when clients doubt you because of your age, there's only one response: become undeniable. That mindset helped him secure several million dollars in work during his first year in the office—not by taking shortcuts, but by holding himself to a higher standard than anyone expected.
While some might view youth as a liability in this industry, Rathjen has turned it into an asset by pairing energy and adaptability with an unwavering commitment to professionalism—earning the respect of owners, manufacturers, and consultants alike, one project at a time.
RC: How long have you been in the roofing industry and how did you get your start?
CR: This will be my 8Th year at Madsen roofing and waterproofing. It is a family business so that’s how I got involved started straight out of high school.
RC: What are the top reasons why your company or the company you’re involved with is successful?

RC: What are the big challenges in your market?
CR: I would say our challenges are labor shortages and skilled workforce gaps.
RC: Do you see your age as an advantage or disadvantage in this business?
CR: I see it as a good thing roofing is an industry built on energy, resilience, and relationship-building. Being younger allows me to bring drive, adaptability, and a modern approach to operations, marketing, and customer communication.

RC: What area of the roofing business are you most passionate about? Why?
CR: I am most passionate about operations because I enjoy building systems that create consistency and accountability. Roofing can be unpredictable due to weather, labor variables, and material supply issues, so having strong processes in place makes a major difference.
