International Roofing Expo Announces 2021 Virtual Event and New Conference Dates

With health concerns at the top of everyone's minds, International Roofing Expo (IRE) officials announced they will hold a virtual event in March 2021 and move the physical event to later in 2021.

Initially scheduled for Feb. 24-26, IRE was moved to April 14-16 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. IRE announced it will now hold a virtual event March 2-4 and an in-person event from Aug. 10-12 at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center in Las Vegas.

“We are thrilled about the addition of a complementary virtual event and being able to provide the industry with more of the education and content they look forward to every year," said Ray Giovine, group director for the IRE and Informa Markets. "By transitioning our live event to August and launching our virtual event in March, we’re able to create an opportunity to connect our audiences across multiple channels throughout the year.”

The virtual conference and expo will allow the industry to share best practices, discuss the latest trends and see the newest products and technology without having to leave homes or offices. This virtual event will feature both live and on-demand educational sessions, a virtual exhibit directory, product showcase, and a networking platform where attendees and exhibitors can interact using chat, video calls and other e-communications.

In August, attendees can head to Sin City to enjoy the familiar IRE experience of a large exhibition hall that will feature top manufacturers and suppliers, a conference program and networking opportunities.

“We were fortunate to secure the same exhibit halls for our new dates to make the transition easy for our exhibitors, speakers, and attendees,” Giovine said. “We are really excited about our digital offering, but equally excited to return to the show floor this August."

The IRE adopted the Informa AllSecure approach to ensuring the in-person event will be safe for attendees, including social distancing and face covering practices. In addition to Informa AllSecure's hygiene and cleanliness procedures, IRE will follow all local government guidelines as well as the Mandalay Bay Convention Center guidelines. Antis Roofing Receives Leadership Award from OC Hispanic Chamber of Commerce

IRVINE, Calif. — In its annual Hispanic Leadership Awards event, the Orange County Hispanic Chamber of Commerce announced Antis Roofing & Waterproofing as one of the recipients. This is notable for a Caucasian-owned company to be given an award typically reserved for Hispanic-owned businesses; however, nearly 90% of Antis’ employees are of Hispanic descent.

The awards put particular emphasis on companies that have philanthropy and community outreach baked into their culture.

“At the end of the day, it’s part of our responsibility to give back and make a difference in the community,” said last year’s Leadership Award recipient, Albert Pujols, of the Los Angeles Angels.

Pujols founded Open Gate International in Costa Mesa to help people with troubled backgrounds get job training within the restaurant industry.

CEO Charles Antis accepted the award during the event with a tribute to the Antis team members of all ethnic backgrounds at the 30-year-old business. He mentioned the company’s annual Aguinaldo, an end-of-year bonus of up to one month’s salary, as one of the many sharing traditions that “we learned from Latin American culture.”

“It means so much to receive this now, during Hispanic Heritage Month, when we honor Latin American traditions,” Antis said. “We learn honor and respect from our Latin American employees, who show a deep philanthropic spirit."

Narciso Alarcon, senior field operations manager for Antis, said that giving back is the way the company has always been and it is what unites them.

“Watching us all work together … to me it reflects the (shared) culture that we have,” Alarcon said.

The chamber highlighted Antis’ deep commitment to philanthropic ventures, from Second Harvest food bank donations to giving free roofing services to Habitat for Humanity, and noted that COVID-19 didn't stop the roofing contractor from giving back.

“The pandemic hasn’t slowed them down one bit. It’s only strengthened their resolve to do more," said Chamber President and CEO Reuben D. Franco.

The 2020 Hispanic Leadership Award was also bestowed on OC Hospice, Memorial Care and Cambalache and Villa Roma restaurant owners Teresa and Leo Razo.

Sika Sarnafil Becomes First PVC Roofing Manufacturer to Achieve FM Global Very Severe Hail Rating

CANTON, Mass. — Sika Sarnafil announced its recent roofing assembly approvals of FM Global's Very Severe Hail (VSH) Rating.

FM Approvals is an international leader in third-party certifications known for their rigorous and demanding approvals standards. FM Approvals and FM Global have worked together to help reduce property losses due to large hail. Sarnafil has become the first PVC roofing membrane to achieve approvals for VSH over a gypsum board under FM Approval's latest VSH rating tests.

"We're thrilled with the new Sarnafil PVC approvals! The fact that these include the first approvals in the PVC industry over a gypsum board rather than plywood or OSB really stands out to us," said Stan Graveline, senior vice president of technical services and sustainability. "Sarnafil is the first PVC membrane to achieve what no others have been able to do, once again reinforcing our claim that Sika Sarnafil is the leader in thermoplastic PVC membranes for roofing and waterproofing applications."

FM Global, along with FM Approvals, has been working to test the effectiveness of roofing industry products against several types of extreme weather events. In 2018, FM Global updated their Loss Prevention Data Sheet 1-34, implementing more severe requirements for achieving the VSH designation and expanding the area defined to be subjected to VSH in the U.S.

The new hail zone map, Very Severe Hail in the United States, now includes Texas, Oklahoma, Colorado and Wyoming. Other areas affected are Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, Kansas and some parts of Arkansas, Missouri, Iowa, Minnesota, Montana and New Mexico.
